Rebound in the credit crisis and siege

The economic crisis has already caused a rise in the unemployment rate up to 20% and an increase in delinquencies to historical rates of 6.19%, according to April. More and more people who are unable to meet its expenses or debts. Credit fraud: what are they and how to protect

It takes place on average 70 per day. It is steadily increasing in recent years.

What are they and how do they credit fraud?
A credit fraud is a criminal activity that aims to buy goods or obtain credit with the premeditated intention not to repay the financing and not pay the fine. To do this, fraudsters illegally using identifying information of unsuspecting victims. May occur two types of identity theft (or impersonation): total or partial, depending on the fact that the fraudster decides to use only the identity data stolen or integrate data with other fictional or real.

The Observatory on fraud organized by CRIF has shown that in Italy in 2008 alone there were over 25,000 cases of credit fraud, an increase of +11% over 2007, totaling over 145 million euros. This means that every day in our country are over 70 credit fraud perpetrated but, more importantly, this phenomenon has been growing steadily in recent years because, unfortunately, that it is a type of fraud rather simple: the data necessary are easy to retrieve (name, surname, place and date of birth, social security number) and thanks to advanced technological tools criminals can create new identification documents, hardly distinguishable from real ones.

Scammed? What to do?

What can you do if you’ve been scammed?

If you think you have been scammed for consumption, or if you assume that this is a scam, you can report incidents to the Directorate General Enforcement and Mediation (CMB) of the FPS Economy.

Why is it important to do?

Because your report will allow the CMB have a global view of suspicious practices that target consumers in Belgium. CMB has legal remedies within its competence, and collaborating with other supervisors when the material does not fall within its competence. Constructive debate on how best to understand a fraudulent practice has also held regularly in the coordination platform of mass fraud that includes such services as police, representatives of judicial authorities. By informing the CMB, you will help prevent others from falling into the trap!

How to distinguish offers reliable scam attempts on the net?

  • Make sure all contact information of the provider (seller or company for example) are easily found on the web site visited. Mostly, these coordinates are in a “contact” or “legal.” If you can not find this information, beware! If only a webmail address is available, use extra caution!
  • Make sure the seller has a business number. Beware of a seller claiming to be professional and who is not registered in the commercial register!

What are the good habits to adopt to protect yourself?

  • First, ask yourself whether it makes sense that an unknown promise you wonders
    Then, take the time to check details of your partner; scammers often use a PO box number as the only contact address or a GSM card, so as not to be identified
